The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gdańsk is one of the world's largest sacred buildings built of brick. The temple represents a Gothic style, constructed in the shape of an irregular Latin cross. Its distinctive western bell tower with two hip roofs dominates the panorama of the city. There is also a viewing terrace. The construction of the church lasted nearly 160 years and was completed in 1506. During World War II the basilica had been seriously damaged, however, its reconstruction started in 1946. Reconstruction and maintenance work continues up to this day.
