Sintra is a city located near Lisbon. The nineteenth-century palace complex, the pearl of Portuguese Romanticism, dominates its old town. The residence was erected on the initiative of King Ferdinand II of of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha-Koháry. The Pena National Palace was built on a green hill, it is surrounded by a vast park and attracts attention with a colorful façade. Saturated shades of yellow and intense red on clear, sunny days are visible from distances of up to several dozen kilometers. One of the most characteristic elements of the building is the stately clock tower from 1843, distinguished by the richness of architectural details. Currently, the building serves mainly as a museum and popular tourist attraction.
