Curative properties of honey and propolis (so called bee glue) are commonly known, however, when we focus on the benefits obtained from them, we rarely think of the reasons for which these substances are produced by bees. Honey, made from floral nectar or other substances contained in leaves of coniferous trees, is used by bees as food. It is also produced by other insects, e.g. wasps, however, they used plants that are poisonous for people in order to produce honey and for that reason eating such honey is very dangerous. Propolis is made of resin and tree buds. Bees use it to fix and seal bee hives. They also use it to cover the remains of vermin that entered the hive, but are too heavy to be removed (e.g. mice or shrews).
