Polynesia is an archipelago which consists of islands of coral and volcanic origin, located in eastern part of Oceania on both sides of the Equator and the international date line. The basis of Polynesian economy is fishing and farming. Fishermen create a separate social stratum in the country the social structure of which is based on the class division. The Polynesians believe that fishing boats are not only tools, means used to reach a destination, but also the members of the fishing crew. That is why on the boats’ prows they paint eyes in order to let the boats "see" where they sail (and in case of storm let them safely return to the coast). Every time they set sail it is preceded by proper magical rituals.
