Present-day Norwegians are among the world leaders in the field of architecture. The traditions of construction in this Scandinavian country originate directly from the old way of building – the relation between this branch of industry and nature is continually emphasized. Timber has been a natural building material for centuries as it is easily accessible and it guarantees warmth in unfavorable weather conditions. Nevertheless, building from timber carries the risk of fire, but a few wooden buildings have survived in Norway since the Middle Ages.
