Santorini is the Greek island that is the part of the archipelago of the same name, which is also the part of a larger group of islands called the Cyclades. The name Santorini translates to Saint Irene. The contemporary shape of the island confirms records from the ancient times that describe a volcanic eruption due to which a large part of the island, which used to be round at that time, was flooded. The eruption put an end to the settlements of the representatives of the Minoan civilization, which was highly advanced at that time. Today the island is mostly known for a picturesque landscape which is created by beautiful architecture.
