Jackson is the capital of the state of Mississippi and is located on the River Pearl. The city owes its name to 19th-century American president – Andrew Jackson – who after defeating the English in the Battle of New Orleans became a national hero. Today there are several colleges and universities, a few parks, sports facilities and museums. When visiting Jackson it is worth seeing the local zoo and the Old State Capitol. Kid Rock, an American singer, wrote a song about the city titled Jackson, Mississippi.
