Varenna is a picturesque fishing village situated on the shores of Alpine Lake Como. The village lies on the eastern shore of the lake, where a local fisherman founded the first settlement as early as in769. The rich nature of the lake provided the inhabitants with a living for a long time, providing fish and allowing trade (the lake is the third largest reservoir of this kind in Italy). Currently, fishing is not as important for the local population as it used to be, but the lake still remains the main source of income in the region. Due to its stunning location among the rocky peaks, it is one of the most visited places in the north of Italy.
