The Greek city of Nafplio, also known as Nauplio or Nauplion, lies on the Peloponnese peninsula. The location on the Argolic Gulf made this small settlement an important commercial port from. Since the Middle Ages the city changed hands. It was occupied by crusaders, Venetians and Ottoman Turks. The complex of Palamidi fortifications from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries located in Nafplion is an archeological gem. Today the city is a popular tourist resort. The name Nafplio refers to the name of the son of Poseidon and the ruler of Euboea – mythical Nauplios.
