Mount Fuji is an active volcano, which is also the highest peak of Japan and the greatest attraction of the island of Honshu. You can choose from five tourist routes to reach the top of the 3776-meter mountain. Fuji also has religious significance and is the destination of pilgrimages. The snow-covered cone of the holy mountain is very often depicted in painting, woodcut and photography, also as a picturesque background for pink cherry blossoms. The last eruption of Mount Fuji took place in 1707, which was a consequence of the earthquake. Since then, the stratovolcano remains dormant.
