Peradeniya is located in the suburbs of Kandy, the capital of one of Sri Lanka's provinces. There is a university and an impressive botanic garden, founded by the British in 1824, in the place of the former royal gardens, dating back to the 14th century. Currently, the park covers an area of 60 hectares. In this area visitors can find cinnamon trees and nutmegs, giant bamboos, orchids, various species of palm trees, as well as squirrels, turtles and bats. The garden also has a small lake, manicured paths along which you can walk, numerous picnic areas and a restaurant.
