Rila is the highest mountain range in the Bakans, located in the south-western part of Bulgaria (50 km from Sofia). Musala is the highest summit of the mountains (2925 m). The Rila built of marbles and granites creates a tectonic horst with numerous berms. The climate that is prevalent in the area of the massif is harsh, however, the mountains are considered to be a tourist attraction due to beautiful landscapes (high summits, clear icy lakes, ravines and chasms) and historic monuments (e.g. the famous Rila Monastery).
