Warm, homemade footwear decorated with colorful ornaments is a beautiful and functional souvenir from Greece. Woolen slippers on a leather sole can be bought at many marketplaces and street stalls. Their characteristic feature is a large pompom and built up upper with a narrow cut, referring to folk patterns. Shoes with ball-shaped tassels are very popular on the Balkan Peninsula. The so-called tsarouhia, i.e. footwear with colorful pompoms on the tops, were worn as part of the traditional uniform of light infantry.
