The genesis of the custom of giving gifts to relatives for Christmas, Santa Claus Day and Epiphany is not entirely clear. According to some theories, it is a reference to the gifts given to little Jesus by Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, whereas other theories perceive the beginnings of the tradition known almost all over the world in the legends of Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra. According to one of them, the man having learned about the difficult situation of the three nubile sisters, surreptitiously threw moneybags through the chimney for their dowries. The gift of the bishop fell into the shoes of the virgins, which is why the custom of putting small gifts in shoes or long socks hung on the mantelpiece is still preserved.
