The Transfăgărăşan national road, also known as Ceaușescu's Folly, crosses the highest mountain range in the Romanian Carpathians – Făgăraș Mountains. The highway connecting the historic regions of Wallachia and Transylvania was opened in the 1970s. The winding national road is frequented by tourists, as it offers stunning views, many attractions in the nearby towns, as well as good recreational and hotel facilities. Moldoveanu is the highest peak of the Făgăraș Mountains, rising 2,544 meters above sea level. The uppermost section of the Transfăgărăşan road is located 2,034 meters above sea level.
