Derzeit hat die Stadt La Paz zwei Millionen Einwohner. Es wurde Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts an einem Ort einer ehemaligen indischen Siedlung gegründet. Die Lage der Stadt am Fuße des Illimani-Vulkanmassivs ermöglichte die Schaffung einer spezifischen architektonischen Umgebung - Gebäude sind so angeordnet, dass ein Stockwerk über dem anderen liegt, aus der Ferne vermittelt es den Eindruck eines Mosaiks. Die Höhenhöhe im Gebiet von La Paz schwankt zwischen 500 m.
