The history of the book has a few thousand years. Historically, literary texts were written on papyrus rolls, which gradually began to be displaced by more durable parchment, the material which is made from animal skin. A number parchment sheets were sewn on one side and that is how the codes were created. Paper that had been invented in China reached Europe over time. The use of a movable type turned out to be the real revolution. It is now accepted that printing was invented in 1450 by Johannes Gutenberg. Since that time books could be mass-produced – it was no longer necessary to rewrite texts manually and therefore they could be read by a wider audience.
