Maximilian of Austria laid the siege to the city of Kraków after he was elected king of Poland by one faction during the Sejm, while Sigismund III Vasa had been elected by the other. With the Swede having yet to reach the then Polish capital, the Habsburg tried to use this opportunity to force his reign upon the Poles, but to no avail. The citizens repelled the attack, commanded by hetman Jan Zamoyski. To cut the story short, Sigismund III then went on to take the crown in Kraków and rule the country until early 1630s as the first Vasa on the Polish throne. © The Trustees of the British Museum.
