Powder called tikka or tilaka is used in Hinduism – it is particularly known as a substance used for painting body signs which identify the person in terms of religious affiliation. Depending on the affiliation the sign may have the shape of a circular spot, a pattern similar to a letter “u”, or three horizontal stripes. Clay, which is dried until it gets the form of powder, is extracted from sacred rivers and lakes.
