Crewel is made from various raw materials – natural and artificial. Among the first group we may find mostly cotton and wool. These are the raw materials that have been used in the process of textile production for thousands of years – it is assumed that cotton was already known in Egypt about 12 thousand years ago, woolen manufactures were also made in ancient times in the Near East. At present crewel is also made of artificial materials, mostly of acrylic, artificial silk and polyamide.
