Building sand castles is a popular pastime at the beach. Children build their sand strongholds with the use of sand buckets, shovel and a bit of sea water. The fun that accompanies their creation is more important than the aesthetic value of buildings. However, sand can become an inspiration to artists who use this - seemingly unstable - building material to create elaborate and surprisingly realistic sculptures. For this purpose you need a special kind of sand that needs to be watered and properly compacted, whereas a finished object should be sprayed with a special glue. Many coastal towns organize competitions and festivals of sand sculptures and such events are considered an interesting tourist attraction.
