Terre-de-Haut is a small island in the archipelago of Les Saintes in the Caribbean Sea. The islands are surrounded by warm, clear waters and have always been inhabited by peoples who make their living out of fishing and shipping. The Indians living in the region had contacts with the inhabitants of other islands, as they did not limit their voyages to their own archipelago. After the conquest of the territory by the Europeans the situation did not change much – fishing was still the basis of the economy and only in the 1960s Terre-de-Haut was discovered by tourists. Today the beaches of the island are seen among the most beautiful in the world and tourism is the most important branch of economy.
