Arc the Triomphe is one of the most characteristic architectonic landmarks of the Paris Avenue des Champs-Élysées, located at the former Place de l'Etoile (today Place Charles-de-Gaulle). The arch, which is over 50 meters high was built in the first half of 19th century, made to Napoleon Bonaparte's order in the Empire style, patterned upon one-arcade Roman arches. It is richly decorated with bas-reliefs (La Marseillaise, Napoleon's Triumph, Defense of France against the Coalition in 1814 and Peace), depicting glory of France and of the Emperor of the French. There are 386 names of honored officers carved on the arch.
