English Springer Spaniel is a gun dog and is classified as one of the oldest breeds of all spaniels. The English lords have already used spaniels for hunting for over 500 years, but only at the beginning of the 19th century the selection of dogs in accordance with their size began. The bigger ones, which are used mostly for springing, were named “springers” due to way they are used. The 19th century was also the time when the breeders began their attempts aimed at ennobling the bigger breed of spaniel. All that was meant to obtain an ideal gun dog. In result of selective breeding in the 1850’s, breeders managed to obtain a dog, which was the progenitor of the present-day Springer Spaniels.
