Citrus fruits, bananas, grapes, pineapples and melons belong to the so called tropical fruits, i.e. the ones that grow in the countries of tropical and subtropical climates. Many of them, such as pineapple or melon, grow on palm trees; others, e.g. citrus fruits are picked from deciduous trees. Most of them have intense sweet or sweet-and-sour flavor. The fruits owe this flavor to the fact that they ripen in the areas of large insolation. For people who live in northern countries, in colder climate zones, such imported tropical fruits become a substitute of summer, especially during winter months. The flavor of these fruits reminds of sunny holidays. What is more, they help to supplement vitamins and minerals during the period of time when it is difficult to find them in local products.
