Antigua is located in the archipelago of the Windward Islands in the Caribbean Sea. The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus during his expedition in 1493. The city of Saint John’s, located on the island of Antigua, is the main port and the capital of the island state of Antigua and Barbuda. Pineapples and cotton are grown on the island. Tourists visiting Antigua may rest on beaches, see ruins of windmills and the base of admiral Nelson or visit the 19th-century St. John’s cathedral situated in the city of Saint John’s. Antigua is also an important sea tourism center, offering Caribbean cruises. Partially fortified English Harbor is situated in the southern part of the island.
