In Greek mythology, there was a young man of extraordinary beauty named Narcissus (Narcissus, Narkissos). He was the son of the river god Kefisus and the nymph Liriope. He did not want to reciprocate the feelings of the nymph Echo, so Nemesis punished him with love for her reflection in the water. Narcissus died of unsatisfied longing, and after his death, a beautiful flower grew on his grave, later named after him.
