The High Tatras lie in the south of Poland and north of Slovakia. They represent the highest part of the Tatras mountain range and have an alpine character, with distinctive towering crags. The highest peak of the High Tatras is 2655-meter Gerlach. In the area of the High Tatras there are different size lakes of glacial origin, commonly called ponds. In the Slovak part of the High Tatras there is a group of the so called Staroleśne Lakes, which consist of 27 mountain lakes.
