El Capitan, also called El Cap, is the rocky formation located in the Yosemite National Park (on the Yosemite River). The formation is over 1 km high. Its name is the translation of an Indian name, which means "a chief". El Capitan, which is built of granite, is a well-known tourist and climbing destination (there are over 70 climbing routes leading through the formation, including one of the best known in the world, called the "nose").
