Nail polish is a cosmetic product known to all, which has a surprisingly long history. Its use in the West was popularized at the beginning of the 20th century, nevertheless, the methods of staining and polishing nails to give them a nicer look had been known earlier. In China, various nail polishes were used in 3000 BC. Painted nails were a sign of social status for many millennia there, whereas the favorite colors of the aristocrats were gold, silver and red. Also in ancient Egypt nails were stained in order to emphasize the social position. The red color was reserved for the aristocracy there, while the poorer layers applied light polishes.
