The Opal is a passenger catamaran launched in 1981. For many years it sailed abroad, calling mainly at ports in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Germany. Since 2000 the Opal has been owned by Żegluga Gdańska (English: Gdańsk Shipping Company). The catamaran can take up to five hundred passengers and its total length is over thirty-seven meters. Currently, it goes most frequently between Gdańsk and Hel, however, it used to sail at much longer distances, among other places, to Senegal, Gambia or Sierra Leone. Apart from the Opal, Żegluga Gdańska owns three other passenger catamarans – Agat, Rubin and Onyx.
