Cape Reinga lighthouse was built in 1942. Towards the end of 1990’s the lighthouse was fully automated, which resulted in withdrawing the lighthouse staff. Today the lighthouse is controlled from Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. The place where the lighthouse is located is the furthest northward point of New Zealand available for visitors. In 2007 the cape Reinga lighthouse was enlisted on the preliminary UNESCO list, awaiting the status of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
