Santorini (ancient Thira) is an volcanic island located in the Aegean Sea. During the period of the Minoan civilization a mighty eruption occurred in result of which Thira was completely destroyed. Luckily, its citizens managed to evacuate themselves just before the volcano eruption. Present-day Santorini owes its development mostly to incomes from tourism. There are numerous archeological excavations on the island, some of the excavated ruins date back to the Minoan civilization.
