Colosseum is probably the best-known edifice of Rome. The construction from the 1st century has survived until the present day, however, the modern Roman metropolis poses numerous threats to its further existence. The large number of tourists visiting the place every year is the most obvious problem – the authorities must do their best to protect the structure from irresponsible visitors. What is more, Colosseum is being damaged due to air pollution – its condition has been significantly strained by smog and acid rains. The authorities have recently introduced a ban on cars’ traffic in the streets near the monument – it is meant to reduce the amount of exhaust fumes in its neighborhood as well as reduce the vibration of the ground.
