Birmingham is the largest city in the state of Alabama in south-east of the United States. The city was founded in 1871 after the Civil War through the merger of three pre-existing farm towns. In the process of growing Birmingham annexed other smaller neighbors, reaching the size of the main industrial center of the region. Mining, steel and iron industry and rail transport used to be the basis of the city’s economy. The city owes its name of the birthplace of the English Industrial Revolution, which is also called Birmingham. Most probably the city received such a name due to the fact that it was founded mostly by the emigrants from Great Britain, who associated the industrial look of the new city with their native country.
