Galway is a city located in the western part of Ireland. The city was granted its charter in the 15th century, when it flourished the most. In the Middle Ages the largest Irish port was ruled by fourteen merchant families, which competed with one another, contributing at the same time to the economic growth of the city. Unfortunately, the city deteriorated in the 17th century due to the war fought between Ireland and England. The city was restored to its former glory at the end of the 20th century and today it attracts visitors with abundant medieval architecture and typical Irish atmosphere. The Celtic traditions of the place are emphasized everywhere in the city – the great majority of the city’s residents know the Irish language and use it daily. There are Irish festivals of music and dance organized as well as the professional Irish theatre operates here. The city is also called the Gate to Gaeltacht - i.e. the area where the Irish language is uses.
