Charleston lies in South Carolina on the Atlantic Ocean. The city was founded in 1670 and was named after King Charles II. The Civil War began here in 1861. The city has retained its old-fashioned charm and elegance of the South. There are many historic buildings in Charleston including beautifully restored historic villas that are surrounded by palm trees. Most of the villas offer tours and B & B (Bed and Breakfast) services. The Palmer House is one of the most original residences of this type, it is also known as the Pink Palace thanks to the color of the facade. The building was erected in 1848 by John Ravenel.
