The charming village of Wasdale Head is located at the foot of the mountain peaks. The neighborhood of this small hamlet is unique: the highest mountain, deepest lake and the smallest church in England are situated nearby. Tourists may also admire a historic packhorse bridge near the village. The bridge consists of a single stone arch, which allows efficient transport of horses or mules carrying sacks filled. Bridges of that type were often built on trade routes in the 17th and 18th centuries. There are still many such stone bridges preserved in Cumbria.
