Gotland is the largest island in the Baltic Sea. In the Middle Ages it was an important commercial center. In summer Visby, which is the capital of the island, becomes one of the favorite holiday destinations of the Swedes as well as foreign tourists. The panorama of the town is dominated by the Protestant Cathedral of Blessed Virgin Mary. In Visby there are ruins of as many as twenty-three churches, it is also worth visiting the eighteenth-century town hall and numerous museums, galleries and local eateries. Vast green areas situated near the medieval defensive walls allow visitors to relax after admiring numerous monuments of Visby.
