New York is one of the largest and most crowded cities in the world. Due to the huge number of inhabitants, tourists and limited space, almost from the very beginning of the existence of the Big Apple, high-rise buildings with narrow staircases have been built to save as much space as possible. This state of affairs forced the city authorities to introduce special safety regulations. Each building, next to an ordinary evacuation route leading through the staircase, must be equipped with external fire escape stairs, which allow escape in the case of obstruction of passageways inside the house.
