Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, located on the right bank of the river Tagus. A small town of Almada, known primarily for the enormous statue of Cristo Rei, i.e. Christ the King, is located on the other bank of the river. The statue was erected as a token of gratitude for sparing the Portuguese from serious war damage. The statue of Jesus with his arms spread wide resembles the one standing in Rio de Janeiro. A hundred-meter monument is clearly visible from Lisbon that is just 10 kilometers away.
