the capital and the largest city of Japan, located on the south-eastern coast of Honshu, and also the largest metropolitan area in the world with 38,305,000 inhabitants (as of April 2018) [2]. The name Tōkyō (Japanese 東京) means "Eastern Capital" [3]. Until 1868 the name of the city was Edo [3]. <br />

Tokyo is not formally a city but a metropolitan prefecture since July 1, 1943. It was devastated by the 1923 earthquake and also by the US bombing in May 1945 (during WWII). It was also the organizer of the 1964 Summer Olympics and will be back in 2020.
