In Middle Ages the canals in Bruges were an important transport element of the city. It was due to the canals that trading with the areas located around the Mediterranean Sea was possible. Today the canals in Bruges are above all a tourist attraction. Thanks to their presence the city is often called the “Flemish Venice”. Tourists visit the city very willingly. It is worth seeing picturesque buildings just over the canals, through which it is possible to sail across nearly the whole city.
