People have relied on livestock for their livelihoods for many millennia. Women and men livestock keepers keep various livestock species and breeds (any four-legged animals) such as swine, cattle, goat and sheep, and adopt practices based on their own circumstances, capabilities and aspirations, as well as to respond to external changes. Decision- and policy-makers, public and private investors are therefore leveraging livestock development to improve people's livelihoods. Indeed, livestock is used as food and to generate income from the sale of livestock and livestock products.
