The Thai island of Phi-Phi was inhabited in the 1940’s by the Muslim fishermen who came there in search of favorable fishing places. Today the island is inhabited mostly by the Muslims, the Buddhists constitute less than 20% of the population. Nevertheless, the island was already inhabited in the prehistoric times and those were some of the oldest settlements within the borders of present-day Thailand. The island was largely devastated due to tsunami in 2004, almost ¾ of the island’s infrastructure was damaged then.
