Tuscany is a very well-known region located in the central-west part of Italy. It owes its popularity to mild climate, beautiful hilly landscape and vineyards producing delicious wines that are known all over the world. There are not many people who associate Tuscany’s idyllic landscape with Manhattan but in fact it is the region where visitors may admire the town called “Medieval Manhattan”. It is San Gimignano, the medieval town in which wealthy residents erected high quadrilateral defensive towers – they were also the indication of their owners’ wealth. The town flourished in the Middle Ages, however, it was struck by the Black Death and about half the townsfolk died. Today tourists may admire its architecture, the form of which has not been altered since the Middle Ages.
