The Maldives is an archipelago located in the Indian Ocean in southern Asia. It consists of 2000 islands of volcanic origin, but only some of them are inhabited. The Maldives are readily visited by tourists due to beautiful, wide beaches of fine white sand, ubiquitous coconut palms, figs and hibiscuses. High air temperatures and no precipitation in the winter months allow tourists to plan a paradise vacation even in December or January.
