The western civilization entered the period of technology and industrialization in the middle of the 19th century. Prior to that there were no large factories and even larger craft enterprises performed their work manually. For that reason the production process of shoes, clothing, furniture etc. was significantly extended – due to that the price of those products was also higher. Since the times of the Industrial Revolution the market is dominated by the mass production items and handicraft products are quite often considered as a luxury, especially if they are designed and made for an individual client.
