Salzburg, which is located in the north of Austria, is called “the Rome of the North”. The city owes this proud nickname to its charming old town. The old town covers the area of about 1km2, but there are 20 churches and many magnificent examples of the Roman, Gothic, Renaissance and Classicistic architecture, nevertheless, Baroque is a dominant architectural style. In the 17th century archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau ordered to demolish many medieval houses and replace them with buildings designed in accordance with the rules of a new style. The old town is dominated by the medieval Hohensalzburg Castle, built in the 11th century. The Salzburg old town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site List in 1996.
