The Buddhist temple of Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, is located on the right bank of the Chao Phraya River in the district of Bangkok Yai. It owes its name to Aruna, the Vedic impersonation of dawn. This monument is one of the most important symbols of Bangkok and at the same time it is the oldest building in the Thai capital. The temple stands out due to its architecture: a slim prang, or a single high tower with an elliptical dome and the four surrounding lower towers. The walls of the temple, which are decorated with porcelain, are beautifully illuminated in the evenings. Thanks to such illumination the temple is visible from afar.
